Twitter celebrated its fourth birthday over the weekend (March 21). This got me thinking – has Twitter reached it’s full potential or is there something more? I’ve read several posts on how Twitter’s growth has plateaued and the number of active Twitter users are steadily declining. However, just last month, Twitter hit 50 million tweets per day. The number of tweets per day have increased astronomically over the past 3 years. I’m using Twitter more so than when I started over a year ago, but I do go through phases in terms of how active I am on Twitter.

  • What are your thoughts on Twitter? Are you using it more/less?
  • Do you think Twitter will make money this year? in 3 years? in 5 years? ever?
  • Will Twitter’s @Anywhere Platform be a game changer?

While you ponder those questions, enjoy Letterman’s Twitter Top Ten list.

I think the @Anywhere platform is one of those obvious features that makes Twitter a little bit easier to use. I feel like Facebook adds these things much more often. When people ask Facebook for a feature they usually get it – if it is generally beneficial to everyone.

Twitter doesn't seem to have anywhere near the resources – people ask for very basic new features all the time and the site hasn't changed much over the years. Yes, we can now make lists, use Twitter Connect, click to RT, and see trending topics by region – but the fact that I have to use a third party site to track, organize and post information doesn't seem very efficient to me.

When will Twitter get its own URL shortener or better yet text links, an auto-complete or drop down option for @usernames, a comment threading option, highlight or call out influencers or people you talk to the most? Maybe never – and that won't help their longevity.
