Fool your Facebook friends with DiGiorno

Posted on May 24, 2010 in Facebook, Social Media

I rarely pay attention to Facebook Ads, yet alone take the time to click on them, but a DiGiorno Facebook Ad (titled “Fool Friends and Save $3) caught my attention the other day. The ad directed me to a “Fool your Friends” tab on the DiGiorno Facebook Page.

The promotion allowed you to put yourself in an “unbelievable” news story to fool your friends and you would get a $3 coupon to use on DiGiorno’s new Pizza & Breadsticks. (FYI: There was also an option to get the coupon without fooling your friends.) There were several different scenarios you could choose from to try to fool your Facebook friends, but I tried to select a more believable story: being selected for a reality TV show. I was able to create a the fake story by entering my name, location, and job title. Below is what ended up posting to the News Feed for all of my friends to see:

After posting this update, I did receive a few “OMG, really?!?!” comments that made me chuckle. Most were able to figure it out that it was real when they clicked to read more on the “DGNewswire.com” link. Below is what they saw after clicking the link:

I thought this was a clever promotion and a creative way to use the Facebook Platform. Providing fans with the option of fooling their friends is a great way to try to make this promotion go viral (i.e., my friends see it, and then they decide to fool their friends, and so on). DiGiorno currently has around 130,000 Facebook Fans. It will be interesting if this promo helps increase their fan base. What do you think of this promo? Have you seen any other promos that use the Facebook Platform in a creative way?
