Businesses focusing on Facebook Places

According to a new survey of local business owners in the US, Facebook Places is receiving more attention and marketing dollars over smaller location-based services like Foursquare and Gowalla. The survey (completed by MerchantCircle) revealed that 32% of local businesses surveyed are promoting their business through Facebook Places and an additional 12% plan to use it in the coming months.

Foursquare’s usage has risen from 2% to 9% over the past year, but it’s not coming close to Facebook Places. Surprisingly, almost 30% of local businesses indicated they have never heard of Foursquare.

This really boils down to reaching the most amount of people. Local businesses have tight budgets and have to use their marketing dollars wisely. With over 500 million users, Facebook makes the most sense for local businesses to focus their efforts. It will be interesting to see how this chart changes as location-based services continue to evolve.

So how is Arby’s using Facebook places? I have been to an Arby’s in the past week, but I did not check-in via Facebook.
