Gowalla adds new Highlights feature
Of all the check-in apps, Gowalla continues to be one of my favorites (even if they don’t have as many users as Foursquare). I like the user interface and I especially like the ability to add photos to a location. Plus, Gowalla for the iPad is awesome. Gowalla just released another new feature, called Highlights. It’s kind of like Foursquare’s version of Tips, only more personal. According to Gowalla, “A Highlight tells a story about a place that is special to you — And it also tells a story about yourself.” Currently, there are 18 different types of Highlights...
Read MoreIs Shopkick the future of check-ins?
Foursquare and Gowalla, two of the more popular check-in applications, have received a lot of attention from marketers, but there has always been the problem of fake check-ins. For example, I can check-in to a Starbucks using both apps without really going into the store. If you’re trying to offer some sort of reward for check-ins, this can become a problem. We’re now seeing a movement toward a new set of check-in apps that are able to verify that you’re actually in the store. One of those apps, called Shopkick, rewards you for doing nothing but just walking into a...

As the geolocation battle continues between Foursquare and Gowalla, it looks like Gowalla scored a big win with the launch of an iPad version of their app. The Gowalla iPad app hit the App Store yesterday, so I downloaded it this morning and gave it a test-run on the iPad. I’ve always liked the look and feel of the Gowalla app on the iPhone, and it looks even better on the iPad. When you first start-up the app, the main page is a huge Google Map of your location and you can see where your friends are nearby. You can tap on their faces to see exactly where they are or where they last...

If you’ve started using mobile check-in applications like Foursquare, Gowalla, Brightkite, Whrrl, MyTown, and the list goes on and on, you might have noticed a few locations are offering specials for users checking-in to their venue. (To see all of the specials currently being offered on Foursquare, check out 4squareoffers) For example, when you check-in for the first time at Noon Midtown on Foursquare (small coffee shop in Midtown Atlanta), you can get a free medium coffee. If this special offer wouldn’t have showed up within Foursquare, I would have probably never found this...

I had a blast in Austin, TX at my first SXSW. I attended some great panels and keynotes, and had the opportunity to meet some talented people in the interactive industry. One of the perks of SXSW is that you can really increase your t-shirt wardrobe. I came home with a total of 12 t-shirts. (Needless to say, my suitcase was much heavier on the way back.) I decided to showcase my top 5 t-shirts in this blog post. Enjoy! 1. Foursquare I’ve been a foursquare fan for the past few months. Recently, I blogged about the reasons why I was digging foursquare. To get this foursquare t-shirt I...
