Facebook sponsored stories, is it a good thing?

Facebook has launched a new ad unit called “Sponsored Stories” that turns your Facebook activity (e.g., Places checkins, Likes, etc.) into advertisements. How does it work? For example, let’s say when a user checks in to a Starbucks, and Starbucks has paid for Sponsored Stories, that check-in activity may appear as an advertisement to their friends. The ad is shown in the same location ads are normally displayed on the homepage (See below). It appears that Facebook has decided to finally take some action on all the negative feedback they have received following the rollout of the “Instant Personalization” program (aka, The Open Graph).
