Facebook has launched a new ad unit called “Sponsored Stories” that turns your Facebook activity (e.g., Places checkins, Likes, etc.) into advertisements. How does it work? For example, let’s say when a user checks in to a Starbucks, and Starbucks has paid for Sponsored Stories, that check-in activity may appear as an advertisement to their friends. The ad is shown in the same location ads are normally displayed on the homepage (See below). Top 10 Brand Fan Pages on Facebook

Socialbakers (which is a great site for Facebook stats) has pulled together a list of the top 10 brand pages on Facebook. While managing Facebook pages for brands over the past couple of years, I’ve kept a close-eye on this list to see which brands crack the top 10 and how their position changes over time. Mobile payments have arrived at Starbucks

Early this month, I blogged about how your mobile phone will soon replace credit cards and it looks like that time has arrived. Starbucks announced this week that their customers will now be able to pay for coffee with their cellphones instead of pulling out cash or a credit card. How does it work? All you need is a BlackBerry or an iPhone (sorry Android users) and download the free Starbucks Card app. To pay for your coffee, simply hold your phone in front of the scanner at Starbucks cash registers. Starbucks reaches 10 million Facebook fans

A few days ago, Starbucks achieved a major milestone on Facebook as the first brand to surpass 10 million fans. Starbucks surpassed Coca-Cola as the most popular brand on Facebook last year and is now chasing the likes of Lady Gaga and President Barack Obama.
